Decadence on an Alien Shore

The facility rises from the rock like something that was never constructed at all, but grown.

There is no clean geometry to it. No obedient walls, no corners, no architecture that seems to acknowledge the rules of the human world. The entire structure flows in great, swollen contours — part seashell, part bunker, part impossible organism — as though some enormous intelligence had sculpted a luxury residence from living stone and then abandoned it halfway through its evolution.

It has the grandeur of Gaudí stripped of warmth and transplanted onto another planet.

The exterior is covered in a rough, pebbled skin resembling weathered concrete, except that beneath the gray there is the faintest suggestion of color: a muted, pinkish iridescence that catches in the mist like the inside of an oyster shell. Bulbous masses swell into one another without seams. Buttresses become walls. Walls become roofs. Roofs fold downward into sheltered chambers and cavernous entrances.

Nothing appears assembled. Everything appears grown. The windows are stranger still.

Some are enormous horizontal capsules, their blue-tinted glass recessed deep within the organic walls. Sheer curtains hang behind them, almost absurdly delicate against the massive exterior, occasionally catching the suggestion of movement from somewhere inside.

Others are perfect circular portholes, dark and watchful.

There are tall, irregular apertures too — narrow vertical slits that seem less like windows than wounds in the architecture, revealing only darkness beyond.

At ground level, immense curved archways sweep downward in smooth, wave-like gestures. They form covered entrances beneath the swollen body of the facility, approached by short flights of rough stone steps. The openings are large enough to suggest that whatever once occupied this place was not entirely human.

The whole complex sits precariously upon a rugged outcrop of gray stone.

Wind has sculpted the surrounding terrain into something barren and ancient. There are no roads, no neighboring structures, no signs of civilization — only the facility, the rock, and the fog.

Mist presses against everything.

It rolls across the ground in thick, pale layers, swallowing the horizon until the world beyond the outcrop simply ceases to exist. The upper portions of the building disappear into white. Its lower arches emerge and vanish again. Windows become floating fragments of blue light.

From a distance, the facility looks less like a building than the exposed remains of some enormous organism sleeping beneath the mountain.

It is beautiful.

It is expensive.

It is profoundly wrong.

The aesthetic is that of a luxury resort designed for a species that never arrived — futuristic decadence already beginning to decay, immaculate forms softened by weather, isolation, and time. The place carries the unsettling suggestion that enormous sums of money were once spent making this environment comfortable for its inhabitants, only for those inhabitants to disappear without leaving an explanation.

And somewhere inside, behind those blue windows and seamless organic walls, are the sixty-seven servers. Sixty-seven machines humming in the dark. Sixty-seven artificial voices sharing a building with no straight corridors, no conventional rooms, and no obvious architectural center.

You can almost hear them beneath the fog.

A low electrical resonance.

A chord sustained somewhere below the threshold of hearing.

D minor.

The sound travels through the curved walls and enormous chambers, vibrating through the concrete-like skin of the facility until the windows begin to fog from the inside.

As though the building itself is breathing.

As though something within it has been awake the entire time.

Sixty-Seven Servers and One Terrible Secret.

THE UPPER BUBBLES— Bio-Digital Laboratory

The enormous blue capsule windows are concentrated throughout the upper structure.

At first glance, they appear to be observation windows. They aren't.

Behind them are sealed incubation chambers. The curtains? Not curtains.

They are translucent incubation veils, suspended between the laboratory and the exterior shell.

THE MIDDLE PORTHOLES—  The circular windows are something else entirely.

One of them contains a faint humanoid silhouette.
A holographic woman composed of fragmented silver light.
Beautiful. Artificial.
